Caught Stealing | Film Review

After agreeing to take care of his neighbour's cat, Hank (Austin Butler) finds himself caught in a battle against a group of gangsters who threaten to destroy everything he loves.

I heard about this when it came out but it wasn't high on my watch-list, for no other reason than I didn't really know what it was about. But I was vaguely interested in seeing it.

And I'm really glad I saw it because I loved this film!

From the beginning of the film when I had no idea what was happening or where the story would go, I was so engrossed in the lives of these characters that it didn't matter what the plot was.

All of the actors had great chemistry, whether negative or positive. We believe these relationships, we believe the love and the annoyance and the fear. We believe everything we're shown because these characters feel so real and authentic. We're along for the ride with them because we feel a connection with them, especially Hank.

Because Butler was particularly great in this role. I've seen him in a variety of roles and I think grounded roles like this is where I like him the most. He was perfect as Hank.

But this is a really fun, eclectic group of characters, so it's fun to follow all of them.

The bare bones of this story aren't the most original, but there's something about the way the story's told that feels really fresh and new. The writing and direction is done in way that completely grips the audience and doesn't let us go until the credits roll.

I love that the story took risks. That it managed to stay fun while also having high stakes, and raising these stakes all the time. It wasn't predictable and it never tried to take the easy way out.

I loved the ending. It was exactly what I wanted for the characters.

Overall, I had so much fun with this film. Whether it was supposed to be completely fun or not, that's the thing I took away from it. I was completely engrossed and had a really great time. So I'd definitely recommend it!

8/10
