Home Alone | 100 Movies Bucket List

I saved this one for as long as possible, but as I'm getting closer to completing this year's bucket list, it was time.

I don't usually watch Christmas movies outside of December, but I had to make an exception! And to be honest, I'll probably watch this again in the lead-up to Christmas anyway.

I was really surprised to see this on the bucket list. It's definitely a classic, beloved movie, but you never really see Christmas movies (or any seasonal movies) considered classics in lists with the 'Godfathers' and 'Gone with the Winds' of cinema, so this was a really nice surprise.

And a welcome one! It's always nice to have a comedy in amongst the dramas, and this year's bucket list had some great comedies.

I love this film. It's a staple every Christmas and with good reason!

First of all, the iconic cast.

We have Catherine O'Hara, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern and John Heard amongst an amazing supporting cast, and leading the film was 9-year-old Macaulay Culkin. 9!

They were all perfect in their roles (O'Hara in particular) but Culkin was extraordinary in creating this character that's still iconic 35 years later!

And then there's the actual story.

Because leaving Kevin at home would have been film-worthy in itself, but adding in the robbers, his tactics and the mother trying to get home, gives us real stakes and makes things exciting and fun.

I think this is one of the reasons the film holds up so well. This isn't just a film to get you in the Christmas spirit, this is a story you can become invested in, with characters that you care about, and it's so fun that you don't get tired of watching it year after year.

But I think the thing that locks me in, that fills me with nostalgia every time I see it, is the score. The Christmas music it uses is great and works really well with the scenes, but the score is just so beautiful.

And not only is it fun, but it's actually funny. The humour, helped by the great comedic actors, works so well in every single scene.

So even though it's a bit too early for Christmas movies, this is one that works at any time of year. It's a great movie for the whole family and definitely one you should watch if (somehow) you've never seen it.
