Sinners | Film Review

Twin brothers Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan) return to their Mississippi hometown to discover that an unexpected evil awaits them.

As a huge fan of Ryan Coogler's movies, Michael B. Jordan as an actor, and specifically the films they've made together, I was excited for this film from the second it was announced. So the fact that it is getting rave reviews and critical acclaim just made me want to see it all the more.

I absolutely loved this film - the hype is real! I loved it so much I went to see it in the cinema twice in two days. It's that good!

The first thing I have to write about, because for me it's one of the most important things about the movie, the sound. The sound, the music and the score are all incredible. There's no way to make it clear in writing how amazing it is or how important it is to the story, you really have to see it. But the use of sound is so cleverly done, so powerful. It changes the tone of every scene, it changes how you as the audience experience the events, and it tells you a lot about the characters.

And then there's the acting! All the actors are so incredible in these roles. Of course Michael B. Jordan is playing two characters and does an amazing job with them both, but the film also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Jayme Lawson, Li Jun Li, Yao and Delroy Lindo, and I don't know if I've seen such perfect casting in a long time. They were all phemomenal!

And with that comes the direction. I've seen everything Cooger has directed and most of the things he's produced, so it wasn't a surprise to me that he did a good job with this. But this film just feels like a step up in his direction, he's reached another level and it's amazing to see.

The visuals are absolutely stunning. Everything is vivid and beautiful, when things are in darkness you can still see everything. It's clear that everything was thought out and planned so well, and it definitely paid off!

This is a horror movie, so taking all of these things away, is the film actually scary? Yes! The concept is scary, there are some expertly-placed jump scares, everything about the horror just works. People actually screamed in the cinema when I was watching this, and as someone who has seen many horror movies in the cinema, that's rarely happened.

But as well as the horror, it's also unexpectedly funny. The writing is so good that it can have you laughing one minute and jumping the next.

This film is unapologetic in everything it is and stands for. It doesn't shy away from being a horror movie, from being musical, from shining a spotlight on racism, on the 1930s, on being an undeniably black story focussing on black characters , it just is what it is and says everything it wants to say.

The only criticism I have of the film was that I wanted more of everything. I wanted more scares right from the beginning, I wanted to know more about the characters, I wanted more fighting, more terror, more laughs. More everything!

As a lover of movies on all platforms, I'm not really the person to say that you have to see something in the cinema, but for the sound alone, this is one that is amazing to see on a huge screen in a silent room with a crowd!

Overall, go see this. That's it, run and see this amazing movie!

9/10
