Jurassic World Rebirth | Film Review
A group of operatives travel to the most dangerous place on Earth to extract DNA from dinosaurs for ground-breaking medical research.
That was a hard description to write because, despite having seen the film only a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't remember what it was about at all, which isn't a great sign! Note, there will be a mild spoiler or two.
I'm a fan of the Jurassic Park/World movies, so even when they're terrible I don't hate them. This one isn't terrible, but it's definitely near the bottom of the list.
The first thing I thought when I finished watching the film, which could be a small spoiler, is that I hate watching ensemble movies like this where it's really obvious that the paycheck dictates who lives and dies. We know exactly who will make it out without a gory death and that takes a lot of the excitement and fun away.
As said, I love the world of Jurassic Park, and even I felt like this movie was unnecessary. There was no connection to previous movies (other than a name thrown in) and if this film had been given a different name, nothing would have changed.
It uses the iconic Jurassic Park score at great moments that work well with the film, but it felt unearned.
The actors didn't gel as much as they needed to to make the audience believed that they actually cared about each other as much as they seemed to. They just felt like a random group of people thrown together, which in a sense they were, but then they shouldn't have tried to build relationships between them.
Having said that, there is a family in the film that actually did have this chemistry, and I enjoyed seeing them a lot more than the expedition. It was also nice to see the whole group of characters interact.
It was a lot longer than it needed to be, and there was a lot of jargon used to convince us that these people were experts in their field and it really wasn't needed. I understand why it was done, but I don't think anyone watching the movie really cared.
The best thing about any movie with 'Jurassic' in the title is people being chased by dinosaurs, and when this is happening the film is great. I could have done with a lot more of this!
Overall, I don't think this film justified the franchise being reborn. It would have been great for things to have ended after the last trilogy, and maybe 10 more years to go by before we're seeing this world again. That being said, I'm part of the problem because as long as they continue to make them, I'll continue to watch.
4/10
