Horizon Line | Film Review

This film came out recently on Amazon Prime Video. I liked the premise, but what really made me want to watch it was the negative comments that it has received. I wanted to see if it was as bad as a lot of people seemed to think it was.

Former lovers, Sara (Allison Williams) and Jackson (Alexander Dreymon) are the only passengers on a single-engine plane, when their pilot suddenly dies in mid-air. With no way to land the plane, and a storm moving towards them, will Sara and Jackson find a way to survive?

This film wasn't great. I can't really disagree with the negative reviews.

For a start, the first 20 minutes felt completely pointless, particularly when the film is only an hour and a half long. We spend a lot of time watching Sara travelling with no clue as to how this links to the wider story.

As I said, I liked the premise. It felt unique, and it could have taken a few different paths.

When the main plot actually starts, the film picks up a bit, and you start paying attention. But your attention quickly wanders again because the story isn't that interesting.

One of the reasons for this is that I never cared about these characters, or their predicament. The characters weren't written in a way that allows the audience to actually get to know or like them - this was sacrificed for the plot, but unfortunately the plot doesn't stand very well on its own.

Some of the things that happened in the film were so unrealistic that it made the film unintentionally funny. And when it wasn't funny, it was just too much.

By the time it was halfway through, I was only watching for the ending. Particularly when I thought that the characters might get eaten by sharks!

Overall, this film isn't really worth watching. It's not particularly entertaining, and it isn't particularly well written. I can't fault the actors, who did a good job, but they didn't have a lot to work with. But again, I did like the idea of it, so it definitely gets a star for that.

2/10
