Ordinary Love | Film Review

Hey Guys x

I can't remember when I first heard about this film, but it had been on my radar for a while because I loved the premise. So when it came out on the Sky Premiere channels, I couldn't wait to watch it.

Joan (Leslie Manville) and Tom (Liam Neeson) are comfortable. They have been married for years and know each other better than anyone else. But when Joan is diagnosed with breast cancer, everything changes. Can this couple figure out the new dynamics of their relationship, whilst going through the trials of Joan's cancer treatment?

This film does exactly what it says on the tin. It is exactly what you'd expect, so you already know whether you'll like it or not. I did.

One of the reasons that this film worked was because of the chemistry between our main actors. They work really well together, and are really believable as a couple.

The film gave a lot of detail when it comes to being tested and treated for breast cancer. Not only was this interesting, but it also made the movie feel really realistic and authentic. And in addition to this, the dynamic between these characters, and the conversations they had, also made the film realistic. Most of their conversations were mundane and ordinary, and this really worked with the tone of the film because of how well written the entire film is.

Recently, movies with similar plots to this have been either love stories, or coming-of-age stories, so it's really nice to see this alternative take. It feels a lot more real and really delves into the realities of the situation for both the sick, and their loved ones - and it's really interesting to see the effect of this diagnosis on both parts of this couple.

The only thing that I didn't love about this film (other than the extremely abrupt ending) is that overall, not that much happens. It's a really straightforward story.

Overall, I enjoyed this film, but at the same time, it was just fine. Nothing about it really made it stand out, but it's a lovely, heart-breaking watch.

6.5/10
