47 Meters Down: Uncaged | Film Review

47 Meters Down: Uncaged (2019) - IMDb

Hey Guys x

I watched the first movie, '47 Meters Down', when it first came out and I really enjoyed it, so when I heard that they were making another one I was keen to see it.

Step-Sisters Mia (Sophie Nelisse) and Sasha (Corrine Foxx) and their two friends decide to defy their parents' orders and go diving into unexplored depths. But when the girls find themselves trapped in an underground cave with only a shark for company, their fun adventure becomes a fight for survival.

I didn't think I'd like this movie as much as the first one, but I didn't know how much I'd dislike it.

For a start, this was not a sequel to the first film in any way, other than the fact that there was a shark in both, in which case it could also be a sequel to Jaws.

When you know the main plot, no one cares about the back story.
This isn't a story where you need to know any of these characters to enjoy yourself, and there's not one point where you actually care about these character's lives. So the back story was completely unnecessary. But what's more, rather than pushing the story forward, the back story actually halted the story, and made it take a lot longer than it needed to.

As the audience, we spend way too much time waiting for something to happen, and that's one of the biggest downfalls of the film. If the danger had been introduced near the beginning, it would have been a much more exciting watch.
There is a second of excitement when we first see the shark, but even after that initial moment, the film gets boring again up until incidents are happening back-to-back.

There's a lot of dead time in this movie. So much so that you could completely focus on something else and not miss anything in the film.

Not only is the film not nearly as scary as it desperately tries to be, but I just constantly felt like it didn't actually need to be made. It added nothing to the first one, it wasn't connected, and there were no real redeeming qualities of it at all.

Overall, the only really interesting parts of this movie happened in the last 5 minutes, by which time you don't even care because over an hour of your time has already been wasted. If you've seen the first film, you might want to watch this one. But if not, steer clear.

3/10
