Hey Guys x

This is another film that I watched on a whim after seeing it on Netflix, so if you want to check it out, you know where to find it! I don't usually review every single film I see, and I didn't think I'd be reviewing this one. But after watching it twice, there's a lot that I want to say.

Former policeman and single father Phil Logan (Patrick Flueger) gets a job as the superintendent of a New York apartment building. However, when the building's residents begin to disappear with no explanation, it falls to Logan to discover the truth.

First of all, if you couldn't tell, this film is a horror movie. In many horror movies, the opening scene sets the tone for what kind of movie it will be, how scary the movie will be, and whether the director is servicing scares or a story.

The opening scene of this movie was so well done! As someone who spends a lot of her time watching horror movies, the opening scene pulled me right in and definitely made me excited to see the rest of the film. Not only was it an opening that was original, but it was genuinely scary enough to make you cover your eyes and hold your breath, and that definitely set up a lot of the other scares in the film.

The film does a good job of keeping things mysterious, and a lot of this was due to the lighting choices. In this huge apartment buildings, there are dimly-lit corridors, a basement lit with a small fire, everything happens in the shadows. Because of this, you really have to watch everything that happens in extremely close detail. The film consumes you and you don't even notice because you're just waiting to see what happens.

The death scenes (of which there are quite a few), contain just the right amount of gore. It's not overbearing, but adds realism to a story that teeters on the edge of real and fantastical.

There is a great plot twist, one that makes you want to immediately start the film over again just to see all the clues. And the twist was explained so well that it made the film that much more exciting and intriguing - you're waiting for an incredible ending to go along with everything that you've just seen.

However, that's where the good parts of the film end. Because unfortunately, the ending was so bad that it was actually laughable. The ending erased everything good that the film had done, and makes you not want to re-watch the film. There were a thousand ending options that would have been better than what the decided to do with it, and I'm just so disappointed in it, because it had masses or potential until the last, maybe 7 minutes. And you know something's extraordinarily bad when it can undo the greatness of over an hours worth of good horror in 7 minutes.

Overall, I would recommend this film. Ideally I'd like to recommend it without the ending, but unfortunately, you have to take the good with the bad. But just be prepared for a really bad ending to what was otherwise a successful, low-budget horror movie.

6/10

Lou
