I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) | Film Review
When five friends accidentally cause a fatal car crash, they decide to take the secret to their graves. But a year later, their past comes back to haunt them.
I was looking forward to this one! I'm a fan of the original and sequel, despite how campy and at points outright bad they are. They're bad in a fun way, so I figured that even if this one was bad, it would still be fun.
Unfortunately, this one was bad without being fun.
For a start, I have no idea why there were so many characters. There were two that I couldn't tell apart until one of them died and ultimately most of them weren't even that important to the story.
One of the best things about the first film was the chemistry with the group of friends. They felt like actual friends and you really believed in their relationships.
In this film, if you told me the cast didn't meet until the second they stepped in front of the camera I'd believe you. There was absolutely no chemistry between any of them, especially the ones that we're supposed to believe are in romantic relationships.
None of the characters were particularly well-developed, and while I like a few of the actors involved, I don't think any made particularly good acting choices.
But that might be because the writing wasn't great. The filmmakers were trying hard to be both fun and funny and it ended up being neither. There were fun moments here and there, and it was never boring, but it definitely didn't capture the ambiance of the first one.
It was nice that there were many call-backs to the original movies, but it almost doesn't make sense for a movie like this. The original incident was so specific, and the actions of the characters following it also felt really specific. There's no way that this exact thing would just happen twice in the same town for no reason. I thought this would at least be a plot point but it wasn't really.
The reveal was obvious, and the reveal on top of the reveal was even more obvious. It was never going to be completely original, but it could definitely have been more of a surprise.
Overall, this had a few fun moments but wasn't great. The original didn't need a reboot or another sequel in the first place so it certainly didn't need a worse one.
