The Wasp | Film Review

Two estranged friends reunite to carry out a dangerous plot.

I'd never even heard of this film when I sat down to watch it. The premise was so vague that it really could have gone in any direction, and I didn't really have high hopes.

Thankfully, the film is deceptively good, and not really what you'd expect.

The first thing I have to talk about are the performances. The main characters are played by Naomie Harris and Natalie Dormer, and they both completely carry the film. They play their individual characters really well but also work really well together.

Their characters are also really interesting. They are women from two different walks of life that blend well together. If the film didn't have any twists and continued how it starts, it would be really fun to watch the path these characters take together.

The film is very dialogue-heavy, and at times feels like a play - I only found out after watching that it actually was adapted from a play. As well as the film format works, I think seeing this as a play would also be really interesting.

Even though the film isn't that long, it moves slowly. At the beginning, the tone and the actions of the characters feels very odd, and you have no idea what to make of it.

But if you stick with it, it doesn't take long for the audience to become completely invested in the story and characters. The more you watch, the more intriguing it is.

Once you realise what is actually happening, it gets so interesting and tense that you don't want to look away from the screen.

Although the premise is very far-fetched, it's so entertaining!

And then there's a couple of twists that I thought were done really well, particularly when the film ends and we understand exactly what the entire idea behind it is.

Overall this was a lot better than I thought it would be. It seems to be a really underground, underrated movie that not many people are talking about, but it definitely deserves more attention because it's a great watch!

7.5/10
