A Nice Girl Like You | Film Review
I remember seeing this when I was scrolling through Netflix and being really intrigued. I like Lucy Hale as an actress, and I'd never seen a film with a premise quite like this one, so I thought it would be an interesting watch.
After Lucy Neal (Lucy Hale) is dumped by her boyfriend over her lack of sexual expertise, she creates a sex-based to-do list that leads her on a journey of love and self-discovery.
I didn't like this movie as much as I thought I might. I like the premise, and it does what it says it will do, but for me it just wasn't executed in the right way.
The cardinal sin of this movie is that it is boring.
This starts with the character of Lucy, who is not only boring, but also a bit unlikeable (at least at the beginning of the film). I am completely fine with her being a prude, and being inexperienced and embarrassed. But there's a way for her to be a prude without being boring. We could have got to know who she is as a person, rather than her entire personality being based on her sexual inexperience.
The film focuses on porn, sex shops and strip clubs, and even with those elements it wasn't entertaining. There were many times when it tried to be funny, and you can see it trying, but it quickly turned cringey, and so many of the jokes just didn't land.
Then there's the romantic element of the film. Not only was it extremely predictable (I didn't actually realise it was categorised as a romantic comedy until I started watching), but for me it could have been so much better without this. As I became more interested in Lucy, I became more interested in her journey of self-discovery. I didn't care about this guy, or their relationship, and would have liked the film more without it.
While the character of Lucy gets a lot more endearing, and you become more interested in her as a person, the film itself doesn't get any more interesting.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend this because I don't really know who to recommend it to. The romance element wasn't strong enough for it to be a romance film, it isn't racy enough to be an erotic film of any kind, and it's not funny enough to be a comedy.
3/10
