3 Month Favourites! | July - September 2020

Image
Hey Guys x This one kind of snuck up on me this month. I've been really busy and as a result, blogging has taken a bit of a backseat. Nevertheless, there are a lot of things that I've been watching and listening to this month, so let's get on with the post! Favourite Movie (1): The Devil All the Time If I had done this post in a month's time, this film probably wouldn't have made the list. But it's here because it's the best film that I've seen in the last fortnight, and I really did enjoy it. If you want to read my review, check it out HERE .  Favourite Movie (2): Can You Keep a Secret?  I have written my review of this, but haven't uploaded it yet, so I won't say much about it now. But this movie is on Netflix and it is the movie adaptation of a Sophie Kinsella novel (which I'm currently reading, because I enjoyed the film so much). Definitely check it out if you get the chance. Favourite Movie (3): Bad Education Check out my review of this...

Enola Holmes | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I knew absolutely nothing about this film until the day before it came out, when it trended on Twitter and people started talking about it. It seemed vaguely interesting (though I have never been particularly interested in Sherlock Holmes as a character), and so I thought I'd see if it was any good. Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) is the sister of famous detective Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill). But when she discovers a mystery of her own, Enola must leave home and enter the world, to discover the truth behind her mother's disappearance. I enjoyed this movie. The plot is simple, but it does a lot with the story. One of the things that makes the film stand out is the fourth-wall breakage, and Enola's voiceover. Not only was this really effective, but it also felt extremely necessary, particularly for a film like this with such a popular backdrop.    Speaking of the backdrop, as you could probably guess, the film uses the popular character of Sherlock Holmes (and...

The Devil All the Time | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I heard a lot about this film before seeing it - so much, in fact, that I was a bit put off. From what I could see, it was either the best film someone had seen in their entire life, or it was so boring and slow that you'd wish for your time back. So while I didn't watch it right away, I was ultimately intrigued about it - however I would eventually feel about it. Two generations are affected by tragedies that cause Arvin Russell (Tom Holland) to take matters into his own hands. This was a hard one to describe, and to talk about, but I really really liked it. It was so different from what I expected, and that really worked. The fact that it doesn't reveal much, particularly in the beginning, could either be seen as being slow, or being intriguing. For me, it started slow, but after the first 15 minutes, I did become really intrigued. The thing that had me completely hooked was the relationship between Arvin and Lenora (Eliza Scanlen). It was something that I didn...

Book Review #80: Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

Image
Hey Guys x I went back and forth with myself over whether or not to buy this book. The Amazon reviews weren't that great, but the Goodreads reviews were quite good, so in the end I had to weigh that up against the price of the book. Even though I knew that it wouldn't be life-changing, for a book like this, the worst it could be was a bit bland, as I already quite liked the premise. Lincoln works in the IT department of a newspaper, where his job is to make sure that no one is using the new computers to discuss inappropriate things. Which means that his job is to sit up all night reading the emails of people that he'd never meet. However, when the emails of two women continually get flagged as 'inappropriate', Lincoln starts reading them, and finds that he can't stop. And soon he is entangled in the lives of these women that he's never met, to the point where he thinks he might be falling in love with one of them. But can you really fall in love before first...

21 Bridges | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x This has been on Amazon Prime Video for a little while. I was never really particularly interested in it, because it seemed like a generic cop film, but I ended up watching it on a whim. Andre Davis (Chadwick Boseman) is a detective for the NYPD. One night, while searching for two men who killed members of the police force, it is decided that all 21 bridges out of Manhattan will be closed in order to stop the suspects from escaping. But as the chase continues, Andre begins to wonder if he is in pursuit of the right people. I enjoyed this film a lot more than I thought I would. It's not an amazing, life-changing film, but it's definitely better than the average cop movie. It actually starts off as just that, the average cop movie. There's nothing that really sets the story apart. It's great that our protagonist is morally grey right from the beginning of the film. Not only does it make the character more interesting, but it makes the whole film more interes...

The High Note | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I remember seeing the trailers for this film, and instantly wanting to watch it. Not only do I really like the two main actors involved, but I also like musicals and/or films based on music, so I made a note to watch this when I could. Grace Davis (Tracee Ellis Ross) is a singer whose career, while amazing, is starting to feel a bit stale. Her assistant, Maggie (Dakota Johnson) is an aspiring producer, and thinks that she knows exactly how to revive Grace's career. Except she has no experience, and Grace barely knows she exists. Can these women work together in order to reinvigorate Grace's career before everyone forgets who she is? I really liked this movie. I thought it was going to be a bit generic and formulaic, so it definitely took me by surprise. The concept of the film feels really safe and familiar. Even if you haven't seen a film exactly like this, the basic concept of two opposites having to work together to save something (in this case, a career) is...

365 Days | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x This is a Polish Netflix film that has been getting a lot of attention, mainly for either the incredulity of the plot, or the multiple sex scenes. But either way, after hearing certain things, I definitely wanted to review it! Massimo (Michele Morrone) is a member of the Italian Mafia who meets a woman called Laura (Anna-Maria Sieklucka) and immediately falls for her. His plan? To kidnap Laura, giving her 365 days to fall in love with him. But will Laura fall for the man she's trapped with? Okay, so... The plot of the film before the couple meet is flimsy at best - it is clear that the writers didn't care what was happening before Massimo kidnaps Laura, and it's really hard for the audience to care too.  But even after they meet, the plot is ridiculous, and there are so many parts of it that just don't make sense. The suspension of disbelief for the audience has to be incredibly high to even think about entertaining the realities of the film. Aside from the s...
