Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare | Film Review
In this reimagining of Peter Pan, Wendy Darling (Megan Placito) risks everything to rescue her brother Michael (Peter DeSouza-Feighoney) from the evil Peter Pan (Martin Portlock).
I've made no secret of my love for the Twisted Childhood universe. As a lover of all kinds of horror movies good or bad, there's definitely a place for these smaller, independent, nowhere near critically acclaimed movies, and I'm here for it! I had varying feelings about the two Winnie-the-Pooh movies, and I was excited to see how similar or different this one would be.
I never expected this to be good, and it wasn't, so it met my expectations!
But first of all, I love the concept. I love the general idea of the TCU, and each film so far has had an interesting idea for their chosen characters.
For this one, I wish they'd have stuck closer to the source material in terms of Peter's styling and appearance. While watching this it's really easy to forget that it's a Peter Pan reimagining, whereas with Winnie-the-Pooh, the characters were wearing the costumes throughout. So it would have been fun to always have the cartoon in the back of your mind while watching it.
One common theme of these movies is that the acting is never really great. And honestly I think this just adds to the charm. It feels like they picked up a bunch of random people and gave them the script an hour before shooting, and I love that!
There were some really interesting ideas that weren't fleshed out enough. I loved Tinkerbell's backstory and would have liked to see a lot more of it. She's also the only character I really cared about.
It was weirder than I thought it would be - which is saying something considering the first two movies in this universe!
It also felt a lot longer than it was, considering it's 89 minutes. No joke, I watched Gone with the Wind directly before watching this, and that almost 4-hour film felt shorter than this one! And again I had fun with it, but the pacing definitely made things drag.
Overall, this isn't a good movie, but it's made in the spirit of the TCU so if you appreciate that world, you'll appreciate the film. I am so excited to see the rest of the films in the universe, no matter how good or bad they are. I think it's a really inventive concept, the filmmakers are clearly passionate about it and I'm on board to see where they take it next.
3/10 (affectionately)
