Your Monster | Film Review
Laura, a timid actress (Melissa Barrera) finds her voice after making a connection with the monster who lives in her closet (Tommy Dewey).
I didn't know what this film was really about before watching it, but I'm a big fan of Melissa Barrera so watching it was a no-brainer.
I really loved this film. I thought I would probably like it, but I didn't expect to love it as much as I did.
At first I couldn't really work out what the tone was. It was funnier than I expected, but also played completely realistically, up to a point. It was a strange mix of things, you really have to be along for the ride when you put it on.
It was also more fun and a lot sweeter than I thought it would be.
The characters had great chemistry, particularly Barrera and Dewey who worked so well together. Dewey in particular completely stole the movie for me, I loved seeing this character and became really invested in him.
This definitely starts to become a general rom-com. And while I can understand why some wouldn't like that if they weren't expecting it, this really elevated the film for me. Because not only was it a rom-com, but it was truly romantic and comedic. Played completely straight, this is one of the best rom-coms I've seen in a while.
And that's because it actually took the time to develop the characters and to find their chemistry. The writers did an amazing job creating such great characters that you can easily invest your time in, while also making them completely realistically invested in each other.
There is a lot of music and performance in the film, and this really ties everything together so well. Some of the songs are really beautiful and sung so well.
And despite loving every single aspect of the film so much, the ending threw me, and I had to sit with it for a little bit to decide how I felt about it, and in turn how I felt about the film as a whole.
Having sat with it, I do still love it. I think I might have preferred a different ending, but I do like what the filmmakers were trying to say and do with this, and I think it was really effective.
Overall, this is not what you think it will be. It's a beautiful story with characters you'll adore and a plot that will have you engaged until the last moment. I definitely recommend this one!
