The Accountant 2 | Film Review

Assassin accountant Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) teams up with his estranged brother Brax (Jon Bernthal) when an old acquaintance is murdered.

I love the first movie so much, so as soon as I heard a second one was being developed I was already highly anticipating its release.

I liked this film. It wasn't as good as the first one, but it takes a few really interesting turns that make it feel fresh and new.

The plot isn't as tight as it was in the first film. Things were a bit messier this time around. The story, as entertaining as it was, went a bit all over the place, particularly towards the beginning when everything is still being established.

It was great to learn more about the characters we met in the first film. Getting to know Brax and Marybeth (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) after being introduced to them in the first film was really interesting, and a good route for the film to go down.

I really liked the main 'villian', Anaïs (Daniella Pineda), but the character wasn't particularly fleshed out, and definitely not as developed as she needed to be. And while her personal motivations were strong, they weren't strong enough to make her a worthy adversary to our main characters.

All of the performances were great. I love Affleck in this role, and he is greatly supported by Bernthal, Addai-Robinson, and Pineda, who all did an amazing job with their characters.

I particularly loved the development of the sibling relationship. Affleck and Bernthal have great chemistry, play off each other really well and have a really fun dynamic that makes the film worth watching. Even if the plot was bad, it would be worth watching just to see these two together.

But because of this, you do care a lot more about the characters than the story. This plot probably wouldn't be strong enough for a first film, but it works fine for a sequel.

Overall, this is a fun continuation, and I would watch as many of these movies as they make, but it didn't feel altogether necessary. I'd recommend it if you're a fan of the first one, but if you're unfamiliar with the movies, definitely start with the first.

The film is now out on Prime Video (UK) so it's definitely give it a watch if you've seen the first one!

6.5/10
