47 Meters Down | Film Review

Hey Guys x

I saw this film last night and wanted to review it as soon as possible while it's still in my head. Also, unless you got to see it early, you probably won't have seen this yet, it's barely out.

So anyway, let me get on with the review.

This film is about two sisters, Lisa (played by Mandy Moore, 'This is Us') and Kate (played by Claire Holt, 'The Originals). On holiday in Mexico, they're determined to show Lisa's ex boyfriend that she's anything but boring. Hence an exciting-but-dangerous scuba diving-style mission, where they're put in a cage and dropped 5 meters under water to see the aquatic life, including sharks, up close. However, an unforeseen circumstance sees their cage dropped 47 meters into the ocean. Not only do the girls have to worry about sharks, but can they make it back to the shore before they run out of oxygen?

I really really really liked this film. Really really.

I am a huge fan of both Mandy Moore and Claire Holt, which was the main reason that I decided to see this film. However, I'm so glad I did because there were just so many elements to the film that I didn't even consider.

This film is, for me, a cross between Blake Lively's 'The Shallows' (a film about a girl trapped on a rock in the sea after being attacked by a shark) and Ryan Reynold's 'Buried' (a film in which a man is trapped in a coffin). This is because, of course there is the element of water and sharks. But the aspect of claustrophobia is the thing that freaked me out about it. Hearing them breathe heavily made me feel like my oxygen was also running out.

I am a huge fan of horror movies, particularly one with jumpscares and paranormal entities, such as the Conjuring franchise. But for me, this film is 100 times more scary than them. Because it's so realistic, it could really happen. And when you imagine yourself in their situation, you really can't see a way out.

Mandy Moore and Claire Holt were perfect in these roles. They're both amazing actresses anyway, but I definitely saw them as their characters rather than their actresses. But at the same time, it was really nice to see some familiar faces!

This is the kind of film that really makes me admire the work that goes on behind the scenes. I've never seen a film that primarily takes place underwater, and the work that must have gone into creating that, both on the part of the director and the actresses, is something that I can't even comprehend.

And I have to talk about the ending for a second. I won't give anything away, but at a certain point, I easily guessed a twist. Having said that, I said to myself 'if they don't do this twist, they really missed a great opportunity' and they did it, so I'm happy about it. It freaked me out, but it was great!

Thanks for reading!

What scares you in movies?
